Raising Kids with Character

It saddens me when parents call about their spoiled snowflake kids, and all I can say is, "You reap what you sow."

It's not a parent’s job to make things easy for their kids. It is their job to help them become responsible adults who can make a positive impact on society. In this week's Deep Dive Podcast, "Raising Kids with Character," I discuss how to role-model the expectations you have for your child when it comes to their character-building.

3 important character traits to instill in your child:

  1. EMPATHY

Being sensitive to other people's situations is a key to nurturing compassion in your child. I spoke to Jennifer in this episode, who desperately sought a character-building consequence for her son who was a bully.

  2. HONESTY

Kids can easily get into the habit of lying, but teaching them to stop is even harder. My conversation with Mary in this episode highlights how being a trustworthy person will be more rewarding.

  3. ACCOUNTABILITY

Good people admit when they're wrong and take responsibility for their actions. Listen to this teaching moment you can apply as Esme did with her son, who got kicked out of band class for missing rehearsals.

How can you raise kids to do the right thing?

When it comes to effective character-building, Jill shared in this Email of the Day how she held her son accountable instead of letting him off the hook.

Marriage First

You know that playground song kids sing? "First comes love, then comes marriage then comes baby in the baby carriage." There’s a certain order of things that you need to keep in mind.

I’m talking about why love and marriage should come before you have children in today's blog, "Marriage First." An established and strong union is the foundation of your family, and to provide the happiest, most stable home for any babies you might have together, a husband and a wife need to make their union their top priority.

Think about how many issues arise out of your exhaustion from taking care of kids, your different parenting styles, and how husbands and wives start to lose sight of each other.

What can you do about it? Start by adopting this as your mantra:

Marriage comes first.

Marriage comes first.

Marriage comes first.

Find out what YOU can do, husband or wife, to reprioritize each other.
