Surviving Thanksgiving: Tips for Family Gatherings

There’s a prominent conservative news host who announced that, since the election, his liberal mother has uninvited him from Thanksgiving dinner. How sad to destroy a family over something like politics.

Thirty years ago, people could talk about being Democrats or Republicans and nobody wished anyone dead. But that’s not the case today, even in families, much less friendships. In today’s Deep Dive podcast, “Tips for Family Gatherings,” I’m helping you stay cool, calm and collected during the upcoming holidays.

Here are some of the pointers I share in this episode:

  1. Take preemptive measures

When it comes to the holiday season, whoever is hosting should email all attendees and say, “No discussion about politics or the election. None. Zero. MINUS zero!” Set the tone and expectations before the bickering can even begin.

  2. Avoid topics that will derail the conversation.

Steering clear of subjects that have the potential to ruin relationships sounds like a good idea, don’t you think? Listen to this episode for the game plan Steven and I came up with to deal with his politically-agitated mom during an upcoming visit.

  3. Don’t take the bait

It can be so tempting to snap back when someone makes a judgment or comment, but don’t do it. Step back, take a breath, and don't get caught in a trap. You can change the subject, say you have to go to the bathroom or get some water. Do anything but take the bait — especially right after an election.

What Kids Gain when Parents Say “No”

Are you a monster for refusing to help your child financially? No! Thankfully, Karla remembered to take this moment and use it as a learning opportunity for her adult daughter:

My 26-year-old daughter recently applied for a mortgage pre-approval. It had been a tedious two-year process, and it didn't look promising. Her mortgage broker told her she’d immediately get approval if a parent co-signed the mortgage. Of course, my daughter asked me if I would be willing. She even assured me it would only be until she could re-finance in a year.

I’ve heard this situation play out many times before on your program, and I already formulated my response.

I truly meant it when I said, "I wouldn't want to rob you of the sense of accomplishment, joy and pride you would get from doing this on your own.” I added that I KNEW she could and gave her some practical advice. She was gracious — not mad at all!

She called me a few weeks later to say that she was pre-approved and that she did it all on her own!

She swelled with pride when she announced that this house would be in her name and HERS alone! I'm so thankful that you counsel people on the air. Even though I've never called you, I have learned more than you know. My children and I are better and richer for it!
