From Sibling Adversaries to Allies

The part you play as a parent

Overcoming Sibling Rivalry

Conflict resolution can be difficult for adults. Imagine how hard it is for children. Steve knew his sons needed each other even as they antagonized one another. You won’t believe what finally brought them together…

When my boys were about 6 and 8 years old, they would fight and loudly proclaim how much they hated one another.

One day I took them aside and explained how lucky they were to have each other.

I told them when they grew up, their petty fights would melt away and they would still be brothers. The talk ended with skepticism on their faces, but the timing was perfect.

A year or so later, we played a game called Risk. For the first time, they ganged up on me and eliminated me from the game.

I pretended to be mad. For my sons, beating dad was a great victory. They could have continued the game to the end, one eliminating the other, but they chose not to. They looked across the board at each other, shook hands, and declared world peace.

They are now 38 and 40 years old and are great brothers in every sense of the word. It has been so interesting to watch and participate in their lives.

Parenting is a challenging task, but the risk and rewards are worth the effort!
