Chances Are You're Not the Exception

Divorce, shack-ups & dating while parenting minor children

I Should Have Taken Your Advice Sooner

You won’t hear me say, “I told you so!” when listeners admit they didn’t heed my advice. But I do commend people who work to repair the damage they’ve done like my listener, Hilary, who wrote:

I’ve been listening to your show for years, and more-and-more I see the wisdom and truth in your advice.

Seven years ago, I met a man who I thought was the love of my life.

We were both newly divorced. I had one minor daughter when we met, and he had two. After a year and a half of dating, we sold our respective houses and bought a larger home for the five of us.

You won’t be surprised to learn that all of us living together was a disaster.

By January 2024, I had finally come to my senses. I purchased a condo, ended what turned out to be an unhealthy relationship and my daughter is flourishing. She’s no longer irritable and miserable. I’m trying to live in the present and not beat myself up for the bad choices that hurt my daughter. Now that I’ve left the chaos, I’m experiencing increased energy and peace. We have a joyful, calm home once again.

Thank you for what you do every day. My advice to listeners is to listen!!! Don’t do what I did and tell yourself that you are the exception.

You have the right to mess up your own life, but you don’t have the right to mess up a child’s life.
